Nursing Students Serve in Kenya

November 10, 2011

Judith Harris, Clinical Instructor at the CON, and eight undergraduate nursing students went to Kenya with Project Helping Hands, (PHH), a non-profit organization, for two weeks this fall to provide health care services in a community-organized clinic. The clinic was started by the Wa Wa Ti women's group in response to the deaths of their husbands and children due to HIV/AIDS. The UNM group joined physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals from the US and Kenya to work together to provide the services. Antoinette Russell, one of the UNM nursing students, created this video. The other UNM nursing students included Lara Britt, Jessamy Phillips, Slany Shine, Amanda Gallegos, Marian Upshaw, Sara Martin, and Jeanne Ruff. Over 2,000 individuals were seen at the clinic, which offered adult, pediatric, dental, and other health services.
