LuAnn Wosick is the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award from the UNM College of Nursing. She is currently medical director for the Ortiz Mountain Health Center (OMHC) in Cerrillos, NM.

LuAnn completed her BSN (cum laude) in 1981 and went to work in the cardiac step-down unit at Kaseman Presbyterian Hospital. In 1984, she assumed the management of a free clinic in the village of Cerrillos, sponsored by the UNM Family Practice Department. As the community grew, the need for more consistent healthcare became apparent. When the UNM College of Nursing was awarded funding to initiate a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program, she applied for and was accepted into the first class. After graduating with honors in 1991, she organized, with the help of her friend, Stefany Burrowes, a community task force that worked for 3 years to develop a community health center. In 1994, the group partnered with a nonprofit organization, Presbyterian Health Services, and opened the OMHC in the fall of 1995.

LuAnn has been the primary care provider and medical director at OMHC for the past 17 years.  In that time, she has had the privilege of providing preventive and primary care to a very diverse community, as well as to her neighbors and friends. She uses her nursing background to embrace allopathic, holistic, and alternative practices. One of the early members of Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), she uses telemedicine to diagnosis and treat patients with hepatitis C. She has mentored numerous FNP students, teaching them to rely first on their clinical skills and then on technology, and that healing starts with relationship formation.

She enjoys volunteering for Big Brother Big Sisters and cooking for the local homeless shelter. In her spare time, she loves to garden, hike, and travel with her two daughters, Katie and Rebecca.

LuAnn continually works to advance patient care, as well as nursing, and she inspires others to do the same. We all applaud you, LuAnn, on your well-deserved recognition as our UNM College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for 2012!
